Scientists regularly use tools like ChatGPT in work and home. But how do you power-house their use without any software skills? It’s called Prompt Engineering and it’s an art to get right. In this Lab, you’ll design the key parameters for a clinical 1 trial for an aging compound! We’ll set you up with best-practice methods, so you won’t be lost. But you will be challenged to build effective prompts. Everything you learn will be reusable back in your workplace (and at home).

For thirty years ELN products have been used by research and development labs, and today the still often are not delivering on their promise. Why is this? One answer is that you first need a map of how data is generated, progresses, and is consumed inside and outside your labs. In this workshop, we take a hands-on approach to analysis of the subsystems which produce and analyze data, and we produce easy-to-understand business process mapping which defines the actors, systems, and data which make up the informatics ecosystem. If you want to really leverage the value of an ELN, you need a map which describes the high-quality touch points, and the high risk integrations.

AI adds to automation, and LLMs add to AI. But, without some insider know-how, integrating these tools into experimental workflows can be complex and lead to much technical debt. And when software IT folks are not available, it can be frustrating. In this lab, we’ll get our hands dirty learning about the world of “no-code” LLM tools. This will give you a clear understanding for how they can help you build and run better experiments. We will cover methods to ensure data privacy & security. Coming out of the lab, you will be energized and ready to try out different LLM-based tools in your experiments!

The PLA® Conference Europe celebrated its 12th European edition last March 2025. As always, the programme, which consisted of plenary sessions and interactive workshops, gave the audience food for thought and sparked numerous discussions during the two days of exchanges with the laboratory informatics industry.

The PLA® Conference aims to provide the framework for discussions on how to best manage data, the golden oil of any laboratory. Therefore, the speakers of the first session dedicated to this important topic introduced and developed concepts such as FAIR, Data Stewardship and Master Data Design.

PLA2025EU Takeaway: Change Management isn’t just a buzzword

Surprisingly, the panel discussion was all about people and that change management isn’t just a buzzword; shift to digital mindset determine the success in a digital transformation journey. There is a real need for effective change management programmes. Firstly, employees at all levels of the organisation need to be educated about the importance of data and the importance of managing it correctly throughout its lifecycle.

While gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of data management, the need to focus on master data and develop new approaches and new skills, such as master data designers, data stewards, etc., becomes clear.

Data stewards should become the backbone of FAIR data and high-quality data, bridging IT and science.

Last but not least, there is a need for educational initiatives on data stewardship. Universities should consider including this topic in their programmes for future lab managers and analysts.

PLA2025EU Takeaway: Users experience matters

Fact is that solution providers from the lab informatics industry also have a role to play in facilitating the digital mindset shift. User experience matters and making the tools easier to use would lead to better adoption and impact. Machine learning could be applied in many areas of laboratory processes. And of course, AI in the lab is exciting, but trust, data quality and strong governance remain top priorities.

In the numerous interactive workshops organised by our premium and gold sponsors, the presentations ranged from introducing the AI revolution in the laboratory, sharing practical approaches to realising the digital lab of the future and demonstrating the accelerated introduction of digitalised processes to presenting new solution for scheduling and planning lab activities.

PLA2025EU Takeaway: Testimonials

The feedback on this special edition of PLA2025EUROPE has been remarkable and we wanted to share some of it with you to finalise this summary.

As the scientific and industrial landscape continues to evolve, digitalisation has become a cornerstone for innovation and efficiency in laboratory processes.

However, to create a truly digital lab, it is not enough to implement advanced technologies, but a thoughtful balance between the people, processes and systems that form the basis of lab operations is required.

This special session at the 12th edition of the PLA® Conference Europe (March, Milan) will address the many challenges encountered on the road to digitalisation. From user adoption and adapting organisational culture to rethinking processes for maximum efficiency and ensuring that systems, instruments and data streams— are seamlessly connected, every aspect is critical to success.

We would like to thank Bob McDowall, Christine Mladek and Jens Donath for leading this session with strong presentations, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Isabel Muñoz-Willery.

Digitalisation & Strategy for Interfacing

Christine Mladek, Head of Global QC Network Management at Boehringer Ingelheim will share her extensive experience about cooperating and collaborating for successful digitalisation projects.

The digitalisation of quality control laboratories requires effective communication and collaboration between IT, Quality Management and Users. This collaborative approach ensures alignment on project timelines, optimises resource utilisation, minimises transition tome, streamlines implementation and promotes continual improvement. Key factors for success include adherence to lab equipment standards, process standardisation, user-adapted trainings, submission changes and behavioural transformation. Support from management, process/system owners and a robust governance structure are essential for the successful transformation.

People at the Core: Overcoming challenges and unlocking opportunities in digital lab transformation

Jens Donath, Head Project Management Quality at Lonza will highlight the critical role of people in achieving a successful transition to a paperless lab. He will emphasizes the importance of managing both end-users and technical project teams, addressing resistance to change, cultural shifts, and the need for skill development. Focus is given to ensuring collaboration between the operational and technical teams.

The impact of Regulations and Data Integrity guidance on process redesign

Bob McDowall, Director at R D McDowall Ltd, will focus his presentation on the regulatory compliance aspect of digitisation projects.

When digitalising a regulated laboratory, understanding and simplifying a process is key to unlocking business benefits. However, any redesigned process must ensure that applicable regulations and data integrity guidance documents are complid with. This starts with ensuring that each application selected has the functionality to automate the process and ensure integrity of the records acquired, processed and reported.

How to adopt new Technologies and remain Compliant

To conclude the three presentations, the panel discussion, moderated by Isabel Muñoz-Willery, Ph.D., Owner and Event Director of PLA® Conferences, will continue the discussion and engage with the audience on how to avoid being overwhelmed by compliance requirements while adopting the latest technologies.

Join us as we explore best practises, real-world case studies and actionable strategies for overcoming these hurdles. Whether you are just starting to digitise your lab or looking to refine and optimise your existing efforts, this session will provide valuable insights to help you drive transformation with confidence.

Let’s reinvent the future of labs together — where digitalisation is not a challenge, but an opportunity.

FAIR Principles and Data Stewardship sustain any data centric approach

Laboratories are striving for more and more automated and digitalised processes. They are embarking on numerous transformational projects, empowered by their corporate strategies and business priorities.

While doing so, the desire to embrace data centric approach grows within the stakeholders and as such Data moves to the centre of basically all decision-making.Therefore, the effective management of digital information becomes critical to the advancement of scientific research, innovation and informed decision-making.

FAIR, the guiding principle for optimising usability of digital data

This is when the FAIR concept, Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, is proving to be a guiding principle for optimising the management and usability of digital data.

The FAIR principles were first introduced in 2016 in a groundbreaking publication that addressed the challenges associated with the growing volume, complexity and fragmentation of digital data in various disciplines.

The core idea behind FAIR is to ensure that data is not only stored securely but also curated in a way that makes it discoverable, understandable and applicable in different contexts.

Unlike traditional data management practises, which often focus only on retention, FAIR emphasises the need for data to serve as a resource for future innovation. By adhering to these principles, collaboration in data sharing can be enhanced, facilitating the reproducibility of scientific work and maximising the value of digital resources.

The FAIR principles benefit a wide range of stakeholders. They enable researchers to find relevant datasets efficiently, provide standardised protocols for accessing data, ensure compatibility between different systems and tools, and allow datasets to be reused in new and innovative ways.

FAIR not only brings tangible scientific and economic benefits but also contributes to building a solid foundation for open science, ethical data management and sustainable knowledge ecosystems.

PLA® European edition, Central Theme: “Connecting. Empowering. Accelerating.”

The 12th edition of the PLA® European Conference, Central Theme: “Connecting. Empowering. Accelerating.”, will lay the groundwork for a deeper exploration of how FAIR principles can address today’s data stewardship challenges while fostering a culture of transparency, collaboration and innovation.

Mastering Data Stewardship at PLA2025Europe

Data stewardship ensures that data is sustainably FAIR. This involves knowing and documenting what types of data an organisation holds, assessing data quality, understanding where data assets are located and monitoring data usage.

In this way, it ensures effective management and monitoring of data throughout its lifecycle and guarantees its quality, security, privacy and accessibility. In this way, high-quality data is accessible, usable, secure and, above all, trustworthy, which should make it possible to quickly detect quality problems with new data.

In summary, data stewardship provides the operational backbone for implementing and sustaining the FAIR principles, while FAIR provides a structured framework to guide and measure stewardship efforts. Together, they enable sound data management and maximise the value of data for science, innovation and decision-making.

At the PLA® Conference, we are proud to offer this special session with the valued contribution of industry leaders from Astrazeneca, SGS, the University of Southampton, Physical Sciences Data Infrastructure initiative and Zontal.

Follow us to stay informed about all the other sessions we are preparing with thought leaders from Roche Diagnostics, Lonza, Menarini, Esteve, Walloon Agricultural Research Centre and others.

In the fast-paced landscape of today’s life science and healthcare industry, there is a need to constantly adapt and improve lab operations to increase efficiency and maximize quality. Labs face the pressure of delivering results and key insights in record time to push products to market, and the use of traditional paper-based methods of recording data can lead to a loss in productivity, compliance issues and increased costs.

Digitalizing the laboratory workflow helps tackle challenges with inefficiencies and productivity by minimizing non-value tasks and minimizing the time needed to interpret data required for decision making. Ultimately this reduces the lab-to-market time of products and operational costs. Working in a unified “paperless” environment with automated data capture, management of samples, and lab test procedure execution allows scientists and stakeholders to collaborate seamlessly and utilize standardized data for further interpretation.

BIOVIA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes offers end-to-end and unified solutions that improves R&D processes in the life science industry for increased efficiency, significantly shortening the lab-to-market time. BIOVIA enables cooperation amongst collaborators by providing better access to data to derive at powerful insights for decision making and reducing physical testing. With the digitalization of healthcare and life sciences processes, BIOVIA drives operational excellence throughout the product lifecycle, boosting innovation in the industry.

Using a unified platform to tackle challenges present life science labs

BIOVIA ONE Lab is an integrated solution which streamlines research development processes to simplify scientists’ digital lives in the lab. BIOVIA ONE Lab is designed to address the challenges faced by life science labs:

Data management: Life science labs generate vast amounts of data and managing this data can be a major challenge. BIOVIA ONE Lab provides a centralized platform for managing data from multiple sources, including instruments, databases, and other systems. This helps to improve data quality, reduce errors, and increase efficiency.

Collaboration: Collaboration is essential in life science labs, but it can be difficult when researchers are working in different locations or using different tools. BIOVIA ONE Lab provides a collaborative environment that enables researchers to work together seamlessly, regardless of their location or the tools they are using.

Compliance: Life science labs are subject to strict regulations and standards, and compliance can be a major challenge. BIOVIA ONE Lab provides tools for managing compliance, including electronic signatures, audit trails, and data security features. This helps labs to meet regulatory requirements and maintain data integrity.

Workflow automation: Life science labs often have complex workflows that involve multiple steps and stakeholders. BIOVIA ONE Lab provides workflow automation tools that help to streamline these processes and reduce the risk of errors or delays. This can improve productivity and reduce costs.

Instrument integration: Instrument management is a critical aspect of laboratory operations, as it involves the tracking of instrument usage, maintenance schedules, calibration, and performance. With BIOVIA ONE Lab, instruments are easily integrated into the platform, enabling users to access data and manage instruments from a single location.

Going paperless – How BIOVIA optimizes the use of data for product development

Organizations have been increasingly adopting digital technology in an effort to “go paperless”. BIOVIA encourages the initiative by omitting the need to capture data on paper and allowing for a continuum of data that is recorded. Apart from being able to access data in a single platform, BIOVIA boosts efficiency by helping organizations reduce inaccuracies when capturing data. The data that is captured is also crucial in accelerating the product lifecycle and BIOVIA optimizes this process by removing any discrepancies at the start. With the presence of critical information available at any time, there is a potential for increased partnerships within the ecosystem when data can be analyzed, and insights can be adapted for product development. Workflows within organizations can also be enhanced when manual paperwork and efforts are seamlessly replaced by digital automation via BIOVIA.

The time for boundaries has passed

As product development shifts from Research, to Development, to QA/QC and then Manufacturing, relevant data must be compiled and packaged up before being passed to the next part of the organization. Each step is time consuming, and introduces the possibility of data transcription errors, or loss of context. But even within one domain, using multiple different point solutions is cumbersome for scientists and can introduce errors.

In place of compartmentalized point solutions, BIOVIA ONE Lab eliminates the boundaries between solutions such as ELN, LIMS, LES, inventory management and instrument management—integrating all the capabilities in a single, unified solution. This approach reduces the need for manual data transcriptions and ensures that data is consistently and accurately captured across different systems. Additionally, a unified solution improves the efficiency of data analysis by providing a centralized location for accessing and analyzing data. This saves time and reduces the risk of errors that can occur when data is spread across multiple systems. Workflows also become seamless, with scientists operating in a single lab informatics environment, instead of having to operate multiple systems at once.

This also pays dividends when considering that different stages of the product lifecycle tend to rely on different lab informatics point solutions-ELNs are common in early research, LIMS and LES are more heavily used in process development and QC. As a project progresses, relevant data must be captured in different places, often in different formats, and it is a daunting task to get a good overview of all the data from these different silos. By eliminating these boundaries, BIOVIA ONE Lab brings all the core capabilities of disparate informatics solutions together and enables instant access to all relevant project information, regardless of what stage of product development the data was originally captured.

BIOVIA ONE Lab transforms scientific innovation

In addition to ONE Lab, BIOVIA offers an extensive range of solutions focusing on transforming Research, Development, Manufacturing and Quality covering Biopharma Quality & Compliance, Data Science, Molecular Modeling & Simulation, Scientific Informatics, Formulations Design, and Manufacturing Analytics. These solutions make BIOVIA a trusted partner for nearly all aspects of life science product innovation and development.

Post-pandemic, the increase in digitization of clinical trials has allowed for radical changes within the industry, such as remote access to trials for patients, increased connectivity for data sharing, and improved accuracy in patient monitoring and data assessment. Next-generation solutions like Medidata Patient Cloud, Rave EDC and Medidata remote monitoring have changed the way the clinical trials industry conceives and conducts research. Yet, a survey conducted with 222 respondents from labs worldwide indicates that new technologies and processes are insufficient.

Laboratories of varying sizes who use new technologies have reported that the technologies deliver significant business benefits by using good processes and practices, yet constant changes, including changes in processes, materials, and technology, create challenges. As a result, they are not experiencing the total potential value.

Labs agree on the need and value that new technology can bring

The survey reported an overwhelming consensus regarding the importance of new technology in the business. 94% of the respondents believe new technology in the lab is important for their business’s long-term success and profitability. They are unequivocal in their responses that new technology delivers quality, consistency, and innovation for competitive advantage by adding greater agility, sustainability, and regulatory compliance. The cost-savings, often reported in the range of 15%, builds a compelling case.

The benefits brought about by new technologies also address the key priorities of labs – 70% respondents have listed ‘efficiency’ as a priority, 33-35% reporting ‘throughput, knowledge retention, and analysis and insights’, and 28% reporting ‘compliance’.

In addition, using new technology helps to put people in the centre. The vast majority of respondents attest that the new technology supports people extremely well – with flexibility to work remotely becoming a key draw.

Yet performance with new technology remains poor

Despite the raving feedback on new technology, labs have rated themselves poorly on performance. Labs attest that more can be done on the following:

Throughput

Cycle Time

Documentation for audits and compliance

Analyzing data and making sound decisions

Even the top 20% labs average 3.34 out of a possible 5 on the self-reported performance metrics, even though they have reported having good processes and people practices. This leaves much scope for improvement as well as further introspection.

Change and data are major challenges

Nearly two-thirds (64%) labs see more than 25 new products each year, and 10% of labs see

hundreds of new products per annum. As such, constant change that disrupts processes makes it more challenging to speed throughput and cycle time. The second most commonly cited challenge is an inability to correlate data from multiple sources. Even with great people and processes, achieving data consistency, reliability, accessibility, and timeliness have been reported to be challenging.

Adding to that, changes required in IT architecture – cloud, platform or IoT – can be challenging too.

The impacts of these common challenges vary widely – 46% reporting high costs as a top one followed by slow response time. Both of these, in turn, lead to long cycle times and impact the efficiency of the lab.

So, despite having a strong business case, the challenges brought about by change, data and IT architecture can often diminish the value offered by new technology.

What is the cure?

What can then be done to ensure that new technology delivers the benefits that they promise?

Focussing on priorities: Labs may benefit from prioritizing new technologies that best serve their priorities and needs. Efficiency, throughput, knowledge retention, analysis and insights, and ease of compliance are reported as the top 5 priorities by over 70% of the labs. Prioritizing technologies that add value in these five areas would be a recommended first step.

Hardware-based investments: Labs have adopted quite a bit of new technology, some visible to the naked eye, including automated material handling systems, AR, VR, tablets and phones, voice control, robots and cobots, exoskeletons and more. Respondents report high benefits for every single one of these investments.

Software that Fits: LIMS, CIMS, and LES for execution are the most commonly used applications, followed by Lab Management software. These applications can help address a lab’s challenges for improving performance, and industry pressures may all factor into which applications each lab needs.

Improving data management and analytics: The majority of respondents report benefits from data lakes/data fabric, blockchain or distributed ledgers, and advanced analytics. However, these work best when the data is harmonized.

Standardization and integration

Digital transformation, data flows, and a mindset shift to data-centricity is now required to unlock the true potential of new technology. Labs have historically been document-centric. Scientists and engineers recorded their work with documents or forms, often on paper. Yet even electronic documentation is often not in a format designed for data sharing. Integration and standardization are the need of the hour now – data must flow between users, applications, and technologies in the lab and between sites.

Yet, most labs currently do not have smooth data flows and easy data access for day-to-day tasks. This is a problem for advanced analytics, which benefit from data across all disciplines, systems, and sites. Nearly half of this response base is either document-centric (11%) or mostly document-centric, moving to data-centric (36%). With this gap identified, data-centricity appears to be a key to ensuring lab performance improves and new technologies deliver maximum benefits.

Focus on data-centricity

To ensure that data scientists and lab domain experts work together closely to generate actionable insights that deliver business value from the data – labs need to focus on data as an asset.

Study supports that data-centric labs get more value from their data and are far more likely than others to do exceptionally well at:

Reusing data and information (61% vs. 37.5%)

Knowledge-based decision-making (65% vs. 38%)

When data flows freely and efficiently, people can access the information and knowledge they need far more efficiently, anytime, anyplace, and any method – and the true potential of new technology in labs can be unlocked.

Article written with David PEYRUC, CEO, and co-founder of DEXSTR.

DEXSTR: a Scientific Knowledge Management System company

The company DEXSTR was created in 2014 by David PEYRUC and Erwan DAVID, both of whom have a scientific background, particularly in bioinformatics and life sciences.

Their background in the Pharmaceutical industry is very close to the scientists for whom they set up IT solutions such as electronic laboratory notebooks or “data warehouse” for Research and Development data.

DEXSTR, is a company that publishes and develops Inquiro software. This software is an “Insight Engine” for life sciences, which allows to leverage on scientific knowledge “Scientific Knowledge Management System”.

BASSETTI: Management of Technical and Scientific Knowledge through TEEXMA®

The partnership with BASSETTI was a natural choice, because the software published by BASSETTI, TEEXMA® is specialized in the management of technical and scientific knowledge. Inquiro’s approach is based on the analysis of unstructured data (documents, large volumes of data such as file systems, servers or even massive external data sources or BIG DATA).

The main principle of Inquiro is to know the field of activity of its users as well as the different data sources, internal or external to the company. It will be able to connect to an electronic laboratory notebook, a LIMS, a file server, or a DMS, for example.

Associated with the Google-style search results offered by Inquiro are data visualization tools, with graphical representations that allow you to navigate through and cross-reference the data.

We will retrieve the documents that are in these different data sources, we will pass our Artificial Intelligence algorithms, which will allow us to detect all the scientific entities of interest to the client, such as bacterial strains that we can find in an electronic laboratory notebook, or in a file server for example. Obviously, these detections are adapted to our client. – David Peyruc –

Inquiro integrated as an add-on module to TEEXMA®

In the 3 ongoing projects, Inquiro is integrated as an add-on module to TEEXMA®, to add new capabilities and functionalities around chemistry and more specifically on the search for chemical entities. This module, offered as a complement to TEEXMA®, allows you to search for molecules by identifying all the names used for each molecule, whether textual or visual. Inquiro and TEEXMA® are closely connected via connectors that allow them to exchange key data essential for information retrieval. The 3 ongoing projects are mainly, but not exclusively, chemistry oriented.

When we talk about Artificial Intelligence, we often talk about Deep Learning, Machine Learning, our approach is different, we rather do analysis of textual data that we call NLP (Natural Language Processing or automated language processing), with a lot of statistical algorithms, which will be able to identify the entities and determine their relevance. – David Peyruc –

The project approach is to be able to identify what is relevant to clients in order to target the effectiveness of the results. Our algorithms, which are already powerful as standard, are configured to adapt to the needs of the users. It is in this sense that scientific know-how brings all its added value.

The collaboration between BASSETTI and DEXSTR is promising, while the new technologies of BIG DATA and Artificial Intelligence are democratizing, the synergies are constantly deepening in order to offer companies more and more innovative solutions that meet the needs of experts.

The two companies are already working on projects to offer other specialized modules such as advanced DNA sequence search.
